Praesidium Mater Salvatoris is a local unit of the Legion of Mary, established at Our Lady of Fatima Parish under the Diocese of Cubao, Philippines. We are a community of Catholic lay faithful — Senior and Junior members — who gather every Sunday to pray, report, and go forth in apostolate under the patronage of Mary.
The name Mater Salvatoris — Mother of Our Savior — reflects our deepest devotion: to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary as the one through whom Christ came to save the world. Organized as part of the worldwide Legion of Mary founded in 1921, we serve our parish community and the Diocese of Cubao with prayer and active apostolate.
On 7 September, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Frank Duff and fifteen companions held the first Legion meeting at Myra House, Francis Street, Dublin. Their model was the Society of St. Vincent de Paul; their inspiration, the writings of St. Louis-Marie de Montfort.
Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri, the Papal Legate to the International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, praised the Legion's work. Pope Pius XI expressed his warm approval, granting the Legion formal recognition by the Holy See — the first of many expressions of papal support that would follow across subsequent pontificates.
The Legion of Mary arrived in the Philippines and spread rapidly through the archipelago. Today it is one of the most active lay apostolic organizations in the country, with thousands of Praesidia established across every diocese, serving parishes, hospitals, prisons, and communities in the spirit of Mary.
Organized on the model of the ancient Roman Legion, each level of the hierarchy mirrors a military unit — a sign of disciplined service in the army of Mary.
The Supreme Governing Council of the whole Legion, located at De Montfort House, Dublin, Ireland.
Governs the Legion in a country or large territory, coordinating all Curiae beneath it.
Intermediary council covering a diocese or region, between Senatus and Curia level.
Supervises a group of Praesidia in a deanery or town, meeting monthly to receive reports.
The fundamental unit of the Legion — a local group attached to a parish, meeting weekly for prayer and apostolic work.
Active members (Milites) attend weekly meetings and perform direct apostolate. Auxiliary members (Auxiliarii) support the Legion through daily prayer and the monthly recitation of the Rosary.
The Legion's spiritual life is rooted in Marian consecration following St. Louis-Marie de Montfort's True Devotion to Mary. Every meeting opens and closes with prayer.
The Tessera is the prayer card given to every Legion member. It contains the prayers of the weekly meeting: the Rosary, the Invocation, the Catena, and the prayers for the Pope and the Church. Members are bound to recite it daily.
Every Legion meeting begins with the recitation of five decades of the Most Holy Rosary. The Rosary is the heartbeat of the Legion's Marian spirituality, uniting active and auxiliary members across the world in a common daily prayer.
The Legion's spirituality is deeply shaped by St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort's True Devotion to Mary — a total consecration of oneself to Jesus through Mary, entrusting all merits, prayers, and actions to her maternal hands.
Written by Frank Duff, the Handbook is the authoritative guide for every member. It sets out the prayers, the meeting format, the spirit of the Legion, and the theological foundation of Marian apostolate. Members are encouraged to study it deeply.
Each Praesidium meeting is held before the Legion Vexillum — a small stand bearing a statue of the Immaculate Conception, two vases of flowers, and two candles. This altar reminds members that Our Lady presides over every meeting and every work.
Members of the Legion wear and distribute the Miraculous Medal, given by Our Lady to St. Catherine Labouré in 1830 — a powerful Marian sacramental and a mark of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Members perform active apostolate in pairs, always in a spirit of humility, under obedience to the Praesidium and through the Church's approved apostolates.
Visiting families, the sick, the elderly, and the housebound — bringing the presence of Mary and the Church into every home.
Regular visitation of the sick in hospitals and nursing homes, offering prayer, sacramental preparation, and human companionship.
Working under the parish priest to reinvigorate parish life — census work, enrolling in sodalities, encouraging the lapsed to return.
Teaching the faith to children and adults, supporting RCIA programs, and spreading knowledge of Catholic doctrine in schools and communities.
Approaching strangers with gentleness and charity to offer the Miraculous Medal, prayer, or an invitation to know the Church.
Reaching those on the margins — in prisons, rehabilitation centres, and shelters — bringing hope, dignity, and the mercy of God.
Organized missionary endeavors where Legion members travel as ambassadors of Christ and Our Lady to establish new Praesidia in mission countries.
The weekly meeting itself is an act of apostolate — prayer, spiritual reading, reports on work done, and fraternal charity that sustains every member.

Spiritual reflection shared at every Legion meeting
Our Lady asked us simply: to pray, to do penance, and to amend our lives. As legionaries, we answer that call not with grand gestures, but with quiet faithfulness — the Tessera prayed daily, the Rosary offered with love, and hearts surrendered to God's will.

They did not adopt Mary — she adopted them. On 7 September 1921, an ordinary group gathered at Myra House, Dublin, with no grand design. What emerged was a worldwide legion. Our praesidium too began humbly. If we remain united to her, Providence will do the rest.

The Allocutio is a brief spiritual address given at every Legion meeting, usually by the Spiritual Director or a senior member. It draws from Sacred Scripture, the writings of the Saints, or the Legion Handbook, and serves to nourish the spiritual life of members.

Any practicing Catholic may join the Legion of Mary. The only requirements are a sincere desire to serve God through Mary, and the willingness to attend the weekly meeting faithfully.
Locate your nearest active Legion Praesidium through your parish priest or the local Curia. Most Catholic parishes host a Legion group.
Visit the weekly meeting as a guest. You will experience the prayers, the charitable reports, and the warm fraternity of the members.
After a period of probation, you are formally enrolled, receive the Tessera prayer card, and make your promise of membership before Our Lady.
You are assigned apostolic work in pairs, always under the guidance of the Praesidium, and supported by the prayers of every fellow member.
John 2:5 — The very first and last words of Our Lady recorded in the Gospels. The Legion of Mary exists to do precisely that: to go, at Mary's command, and serve wherever Christ calls.
